Emalee "Ema" Duggins is being spotlighted this month for her hard work and dedication to the One Community programs. Daughter of Cindy and Drake Duggins, Ema was born and raised in the South Whitley area with her sister Josie. A graduate of Whiko's class of 2019, Ema is on her way to IUPUI in just a few weeks to study elementary education and to play softball for the university.
When asked about her hobbies and interests, she replied sports and volunteering at the humane shelter. Her love for pets is evident as she explains about picking up a stray kitten recently to bring home to call her own. She currently has 2 cats, Addi and Stanley, and 1 dog named Otis.
Having served as a mentor this past year, Ema is not new to the OC family. She impacted the life of an elementary student on a weekly basis. When the OC board was looking for someone to fill the assistant director position, Ema's name came up and we were thrilled when she accepted the challenge. Ema told us she loves being a part of Kids Connect. This program provides activity and meal to children 18 years of age and younger for 9 weeks out of the summer. Just a glimpse at the pictures over the summer shows the excitement the kids have for the program and for those instrumental in providing it each day. She says interacting with the kids, learning their many different personalities/interests, and forming friendships with them has been most memorable.
Her favorite place to visit is Myrtle Beach. When asked what most people do not know about her, Ema stated, "I love to go to Warsaw on Sundays with my sister Josie. We go to the Discount Warehouse to look for bargains. I have gotten lots of things for my dorm room there. We have lots of fun."
Thank you, Ema, for being a special and important part of the OC family. You have changed the lives of so many children throughout the past year with our programs and with your participation in the peer tutoring at SWE. Keep up the great work. We wish you the best of luck this fall at college and hope to see you back at Kids Connect next summer!
