Lexie Schuman is this month's spotlight. Lexie has just wrapped up her first summer as Kids Connect director, and the program was a hit!! The daughter of Keith and Priscilla Schuman, she is one of 4 children. Born in Lafayette, Lexie's family moved to the Whitko area when she was in 2nd grade. This Whitko graduate is heading to Indiana Weslyan for her third year to study elementary education.
When asked about her hobbies and interests, she replied scrapbooking, knitting and reading. Growing up on a farm with animals and being in active with 4-H, it is not surprising she has pets at home. The family has 2 cats: Mocha and Miss Peach.
When Lexie was at WHS, she was active as a mentor and peer tutor. She impacted the lives of several elementary students through her volunteer work. Her personality makes her a natural in the teaching profession. When the OC board was searching for someone to direct the Kids Connect program, we were happy to find Lexie. She had not "nailed" down a summer job yet, so this opportunity seemed like a perfect fit, and Lexie jumped at the chance to be a part of it. Kids Connect gave her a place to use her creativity, love for kids and learning while getting great experience. Looking at the photos posted daily to OC Facebook makes you feel you are a part of the fun with the kids. Lexie says building relationships with the kids and volunteers she worked with has been the best part of this summer.
Her favorite place she has visited is Hawaii, where she recently traveled with her fiancé, Nic, and his family. When asked what most people may not know about her, Lexie stated, "I would love to do my student teaching abroad."
Thank you, Lexie, for being a such an important part of the OC family. Continue to keep up the great work, making a difference and changing lives for those you encounter. Best of luck this fall and we look forward to having you back summer 2020 for Kids Connect!!
