The local AMVets post joined Lunch & Camaraderie as our April meal sponsor. Members who attended served the lunch, enjoyed a meal and acted as the program for the senior guests who were present. When Commander Jim Howard was approached about participating, he did not hesitate. It seemed like a perfect fit for their mission, and they were excited that One Community volunteers reached out to them.
During the program, Jim shared details that were interesting and informative about the local post. AMVets was previously known as the VFW. Along with this name change, a variety of improvements have taken place regarding the facility and the organization. The upstairs reception hall has been totally renovated, includes a full kitchen and is available for rent. The cost if $50 for members and $150 for non-members.
Serving and supporting comes second nature to this group of individuals. They have a passion for Team Boggs MDA and just last week helped them raise over $20,000 at their silent auction, making them second in the nation. The total raised over the past three (3) years is now close to $65,000. A motorcycle rally and golf outing will also be instrumental in raising funds for Team Boggs. AMVets supports the South Whitley Food Bank on a monthly basis and is very generous to the SW Youth League and WHS athletics. Jim stated, "Kids in South Whitley are our future. We like to volunteer and help."
To become a member of the AMVets, you or a close relative needs to have served in the US Military. The local post has 75 members ($30) who ahve served, 85 sons of AMVets ($30), and 73 Ladies Auxiliary Members ($25). As you can see, the dues are minimal to be a part of an organization that is so community minded.
One does not need to be a member to enjoy the delicious lunches/dinners. Give them a try next time you eat out. Also, be sure to mark your calendars for the Memorial Day Parade. It begins at 10:00 AM on the bridge and concludes at the cemetery. This is a meaningful tribute to those who have given their lives while protecting our freedom and you won't want to miss this ceremony.
Upon completion of the L&C program, it was evident the level of passion this group has for those they serve. Jim ended by saying, "What we are most proud of is what we have done for others."
Thank you, AMVets, for being our meal sponsor and for supporting so many valued citizens in our community. Your hard work and dedication are appreciated.
